Big Reuse loves supporting community greening any way we can. Joshua Hakimi from Harlem Valley Garden explains how the garden is on better footing thanks to a donation of pavers by Big Reuse. Learn more about the garden by visiting their Facebook page.
Harlem Valley Garden is a community garden in Central Harlem that serves the neighborhood families by providing a green space to gather, relax, play, and grow fruits, vegetables, and flowers. We were awarded a Green Thumb license agreement in late 2013, but we nearly lost the lot to developers. Last year the garden remained inactive as our future was uncertain. Fortunately, we received notice this past winter that HVG would be saved and administratively transferred to Parks and preserved as a Green Thumb Garden. The neighborhood children have spent many days enjoying the sprinkler, discovering worms and slugs, planting, and cooling off under our shade trees. The kids are also excited about getting our vermicomposting project up and going again. In a few weeks we’ll finish up our season with a party to harvest whatever we can before the first frost.
