Customers, Donors and Friends of Big Reuse,
A heartfelt thank you to all the supporters of Big Reuse in 2016! Big Reuse would not exist without your gracious donations, purchases, and volunteer efforts! Together we keeps millions of pounds of materials out of the landfill every year and create green living wage jobs and training programs.
Big Reuse is both a non-profit social enterprise and a leading local environmental organization in New York City. We support our environmental initiatives with your purchases and donations. Now more than ever the environment needs all of our support. 100% of our revenue goes back into the community through environmental programs and job creation.
In 2016, we diverted over 4 million pounds of reusable materials from the landfill including 7,088 pieces of furniture, 2,139 doors, and 870 appliances. We are proud to say that over fifty families have affordable kitchens cabinet sets, and over three hundred people have bedroom dressers thanks to our donors. We donate materials to community gardens, public schools, and public art.
The NYC Compost Project hosted by Big Reuse runs 14 food scrap drop-off throughout Queens and Northern Brooklyn and takes in leaves and wood chips from Queens Parks. In 2016, we processed over a million pounds of organics into compost and distributed 200 yards of compost to public greening projects throughout the 5 boros. 750 volunteers helped us compost and green the community!
Big Reuse is working with Department of Sanitation to provide outreach for curbside organics collection. In the Fall of 2016 as brown organics bins were being dropped off in 3 communities in Brooklyn and Queens, Big Reuse was there to help answer questions and educate the community about the organics collection and composting.
Your donations and purchases at Big Reuse fund green living wage jobs and over 30 work training placements. Big Reuse staff start at $15 an hour with health benefits. Big Reuse works with training programs to provide entry points into the work world. Working with Goodwill, Big Reuse provides work placement sites for seven adults with developmental disabilities. With Catholic Charities, Young Adult Internship Program, and Fortune Society, Big Reuse provided work placement sites for 3 months for 20 at risk youth and four formerly incarcerated people. Nearly 50% of our staff are hired from these training programs.
By demonstrating the value of the waste in New York City, we have helped initiate policy change on organics and construction materials. Organics and construction materials compose most of the waste in NYC and as of a couple of years ago there was no policy focused on diverting that waste from the landfill. Big Reuse is at the forefront of developing solutions and policy.
2016 was a big year for Big Reuse as an organization. It was our first year as an independent organization, in which we emerged from under the umbrella of a non-profit that went bankrupt. The effort to continue diverting waste materials as our parent company shut down was a huge win, but it meant that we started out with no reserves.
While we are a fledgling non-profit spreading our wings, we ask that you consider donating funds to BIG Reuse so we can continue to serve the community. Anything you wish to donate would help us tremendously.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to another year of reuse, composting and repurposing!
Happy New Year,
Justin Green, Executive Director
