Position Title: Outreach Coordinator

Reports to: Project Manager, NYC Compost Project Hosted by Big Reuse
The NYC Compost Project(NYCCP), created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions.
The Outreach Coordinator is employed by Big Reuse and is managed by the Project Manager at the NYC Compost Project Hosted by Big Reuse. This position is primarily responsible for volunteer management and outreach events. The position requires good communications skills, the ability to think on one’s feet, and the willingness to work 8 hour days in all weather and on weekends and holidays.
Develop relationships with local community leaders and organizations in Western Queens and Northern Brooklyn to build a network of partners that support the work of the NYC Compost Project
Plan, coordinate and lead volunteer processing site workdays at both processing sites and seasonal volunteer events focused on the application of compost and mulch, production of compost, and site maintenance.
Educate and engage participants on the benefits of healthy soil in their neighborhoods and the environmental impact of diverting waste from landfills.
Maintain volunteer event information on recruitment websites and social media and act as the primary contact for all volunteers
Track all event data, take photos of participants, and before and after shots of compost applications
Evaluate, grow, and develop volunteer programming and requisite administrative systems
Increase public awareness of the benefits of community composting:
Lead site tours for interested groups
Act as an overall ambassador of the project to NYC residents and schools
Table at community events to promote the NYCCP
Provide Compost Project Manager with required data for monthly reports
Maintain social media presence; contribute to monthly newsletter; develop content for social media
Project-based management and training of other staff
Staff regular weekly food scrap drop-off sites and promote curbside organics collection as needed
Work with Project Coordinator to manage inventory of outreach materials, distribute and reorder as necessary
Assist in regular program operations, including: distribution and application of compost and mulch, facilitating one-off, annual events and collective programing
Model best practices in urban composting operations to increase the quantity of NYC organics that can be processed locally to produce high-quality compost
Support the Operations Coordinators in processing organics at compost sites
Perform additional duties as determined by the Project Manager and by the BRS NYC Compost Project Program Manager and DSNY
Bachelor’s degree (ideally, in a related field)
Experience with diverse computer applications (Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, Access, MS Outlook, Google Drive)
Minimum one year of related work experience
Experience with Compost Education
NYC Compost Project Master Composter preferred
Experience managing teams, ideally volunteers performing stewardship
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with the public, alone, with a team, and in a variety of settings
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a box truck
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to perform physically strenuous tasks
Knowledge and commitment to composting
Bilingual skills preferred but not required
Ability to work weekend and evening hours as needed
Ability to travel locally throughout Queens and Brooklyn
