New Compost Bins for Community Gardens! - Big Reuse

New Compost Bins for Community Gardens!

Thanks to funding from City Council, Big Reuse is installing new compost bins at partner community gardens in New York City. We started off with our food scrap drop off partner Q Gardens in Flatbush. This past week, we teamed up with local community gardeners to install the new compost bin.

These rat-proof metal compost cubes were created by Daniel Wendlek at 45th Street Green Space with the help of their crew. They have been using the bins since October 2021, and developed the layered composting process.

Q Gardens accepts food scraps on Saturdays between 10:30am and 12:30pm and on Sundays between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. No bones, meat, seafood, dairy products, compostable plastics, diseased or pest-infested plants, or animal waste.

We're excited to continue installing these bins at local green spaces across NYC—making community composting more available and accessible to New Yorkers. Check out images of the finished bin and the birthday cake the gardeners made for it below.
