BIG REUSE & NYC COUNCIL DISTRICT 33 TREE GUARD PROJECT
We’ve created a more affordable tree guard for New York City residents to purchase and install with our tool set rental!
Our staff is currently busy getting trees planted! We are unable to accept orders at this time, however, moving forward, we will only be fulfilling orders during the non-planting season. All guards will be cut in the order in which they are submitted starting at the end of May through September.
As part of this update, we’re restructuring pricing by customer type. Updated pricing will apply to residents, nonprofits, and private purchasers once ordering reopens. If you have questions in the meantime, email treeguards@bigreuse.org
Tree guards are essential to protecting our street trees and ensuring we have a healthy urban tree canopy. Tree guards can be costly and difficult to install, but we created a much more affordable new design that can be purchased and installed on your block. Plus, we have a free tool set that you can rent and return with a refundable deposit!
Click through the buttons below for steps 1-5 to order and install your new tree guard
Orders are currently paused while we update the website and program details. Email treeguards@bigreuse.org with questions.
Follow our guide to apply for a permit from NYC Parks using our approved tree guard design. It will take up to 30 days for Parks to approve your permit.
The Tree Guard Project Kit cost is on a sliding scale: $375 for NYC residents, $425 for nonprofits, and $475 for privateentities. This includes all hardware and materials custom cut to your tree bed measurements. Your custom cut tree guard kit will be ready for pickup at the Big Reuse Center at Big Reuse Center at 1 12th St in Brooklyn .
If you're interested, you may reserve the free tool set for a maximum of three days with a refundable deposit.
Find a partner to help you install your guard! Installation will take about 3-4 hours to complete with a partner.

NOTE: If you live in District 33 and need assistance with tree guard installation, Council Member Lincoln Restler’s Office is funding a limited number of free installations by Big Reuse for constituents in need. Constituents selected for free installations will still need to secure a permit and purchase a Tree Guard Project Kit from Big Reuse for $375 at bigreuse.org/treeguards. Stewarding a healthy urban tree canopy is a locally impactful action we can take to mitigate climate change.
Tree guards (or fences on a tree bed’s perimeter) can extend the life of a tree by protecting it from our harsh urban environment. Tree guards reduce soil compaction, shield tree trunks from physical damage, and prevent harmful pet waste from accumulating in a tree bed.
NYC Council Member Lincoln Restler’s Office and Big Reuse have come together to make tree guards more accessible and affordable for residents to install on their blocks.
- Our tree guard design meets all required NYC Parks Department specifications.
- The Tree Guard Project Kit includes all hardware and materials custom cut to your tree bed measurements.
- The free 3 day tool set rental includes all the tools you will need to install the tree guard with a partner. (deposit required.)
This pilot program is funded by Council Member Lincoln Restler.
