Celebrating International Compost Awareness Week 2025: “Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost!”
Throughout the first full week of May composters worldwide gather together to celebrate International Compost Awareness Week. International Compost Awareness Week is a global effort to raise awareness about the benefits of composting and the critical role it plays in building sustainable communities. This year International Compost Awareness Week falls on May 4th -May 10th under the inspiring theme “Sustainable Communities Begin With Composting!”
This year's theme is inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable and Development Goal, “Sustainable Cities and Communities: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. The theme highlights how composting—whether it’s done in your backyard, at a local drop-off site, or through municipal programs—contributes to the health and resilience of our neighborhoods.
At Big Reuse; we’re proud to be a part of this mission. Through our Compost Project Team, we’ve helped expand access to composting services across NYC, providing education and resources to thousands of residents.
Composting is just the beginning of our work to create greener, healthier communities.
We take pride in furthering our efforts through initiatives like our Street Tree Care Team, which brings the benefits of compost full circle. Our Street Tree Care Team uses finished compost to nourish NYC’s urban forest. By applying compost to tree beds across the city, we improve soil health, retain moisture, and give street trees the nutrients they need to thrive—creating cleaner air and greener spaces for everyone.
