Edgar’s Story: Building Community Through Composting

Edgar’s story shows how volunteering to help an urban farm on Randall’s Island compost makes a big difference to NYC soils and trees - and is an enriching experience for Edgar, too. Help us support more community leaders like him by donating to our Trees Please Fall Fundraiser! Help us raise $23,000 by October 11 to help NYC residents and neighborhoods.

At Randall’s Island Urban Farm, Sunday mornings are full of life. Volunteers gather to compost, tend the soil, and learn together. Among the regulars is Edgar Scottborgh, whose connection to the space has grown into something meaningful. “My relationship with Randall’s Island has been a pleasant one. I enjoy bird watching and sitting by the shore enjoying the views of the East River. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that I am still in NYC,” Edgar shared. Edgar’s composting journey deepened when he joined the Master Composter program with Big Reuse. He expressed, “The program has been a thorough learning experience for me. It has given me the knowledge, skills, and confidence to educate and assist those interested in composting. Elena and Natalia have been diligent educators and a pleasure to be around. I have had a wonderful time learning from them.”

The Randall’s Island Urban Farm has become a true hidden gem in his eyes. “It’s a wonderful place that I would highly recommend to anyone. Who knew a one-acre farm could grow so many different varieties of fruits and vegetables?” For Edgar, this work is about more than soil and plants. It’s about sharing the experience with others: “I can’t wait to introduce my nieces and nephew to this world.”

At Big Reuse, we’re inspired by the dedication of our volunteers. Edgar is an example of the curiosity, commitment, and passion that make this community-based work possible. His story shows how composting and urban farming can strengthen communities while caring for the environment.
