NYU & UCLA Alumni Students join Big Reuse to care for street trees in Sunnyside!

On a shiny morning in Brooklyn, students from both coasts came together to help tend to trees in Sunnyside, Queens. UCLA alumni and NYU students joined Big Reuse’s street tree care event, eager to give back and learn about the community benefits of NYC street trees. They listened attentively as Big Reuse staffer Gil explained the importance of caring for street trees, how they provide shade, improve air quality, and help manage stormwater. Gil reminded them that even small acts of kindness toward the trees in our environment can make a lasting impact.

For the UCLA alumni group, the event was a blend of community and connection. “I’m involved with the UCLA Alumni Network, and it was a good opportunity to connect with local Bruins while also helping the community,” said Austin, who traveled from Los Angeles. Alumni volunteer Emily shared that she’s “a big fan of Big Reuse the store” and saw the event as “a great chance to combine both my passions into one.” Together, the group worked side by side cleaning trash, aerating soil, and spreading mulch. As Emily reflected, “Seeing the progress we’ve made, we cleaned up the trash, and now we put a fresh layer of beautiful mulch. It feels incredibly rewarding.

For the NYU students, street tree care was more than just a volunteer requirement. It was a new way to feel connected to their city. “We just signed up for a service cohort, and we chose to do Big Reuse. I think it’s just a nice way to give back to the community,” said one student. Another added, “Even though it’s such a small group, it can really make a difference for a long time and for a lot of people.” By the end of the day, their hard work had transformed the block and deepened their understanding of how caring for urban trees supports healthier, more resilient neighborhoods.

These students remind us that street tree care starts with small steps - each shovel of soil and each moment of teamwork - and that those small acts build a greener future for generations to come.
