The Biden Administration is taking unprecedented action to protect federal land from oil and gas drilling. Yesterday they announced their plan to prohibit drilling in 13 million acres of wilderness in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, cancel all drilling leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and impose a permanent ban on oil and gas development for 10.6 million acres of the reserve.
Unfortunately, it will not prohibit all drilling on federal arctic land. The regulations will protect about half of the reserve, but it will not block the $8 billion Willow oil drilling project which President Biden approved earlier this year and which will become one of the largest oil developments on federal land.
Still, this is a win for climate activists and it is proof of what can be accomplished when we demand federal action on fossil fuels. Join the March to End Fossil Fuels on September 17th and keep the momentum going!
