The Big Reuse street tree care team has been busy these last couple months organizing educational, multi-generational eco events with community groups across the city, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to care for their own green infrastructure.
During these volunteer events, we work with community groups and K-12 schools in various neighborhoods to remove trash, aerate soil, and add compost and mulch to street tree beds, which aids in the preservation and rehabilitation of NYC’s street trees and prevents future flooding. We also embolden volunteers to continue stewarding our urban forest together, including education on why street trees are important as well as the use of specific tools and tips for continued tree maintenance.
