This past week, I had the opportunity to leave the store and participate in one of Big Reuse’s street tree care events. Protecting and restoring our urban environment is part of our mission, and I was eager to get my hands dirty, literally!
The turnout was impressive, with many volunteers arriving prepared to assist. While some had long been advocates of Big Reuse, others were newcomers keen to effect change. The energy was incredible. Everyone was talking, laughing, and collaborating toward a common aim: providing our neighborhood trees with the care they deserve.
Our process is simple but effective, and it makes a big difference:
-
Pick up any trash – We started by removing litter so the area felt clean and welcoming.
-
Remove weeds from the soil – Clearing out weeds gives the trees more room to breathe and grow.
-
Aerate the soil – Loosening compacted soil helps water and nutrients reach the roots more easily.
-
Add mulch – This layer protects the soil, retains moisture, and gives the tree bed a polished look.
-
Sweep and clean up – We left the area looking better than when we found it, ready for everyone to enjoy.
By the afternoon, the difference was evident. The street felt more welcoming, the trees appeared well-maintained, and the soil was clean and healthy. Observing how a team can come together, work hard, and still have fun was the highlight for me. After learning more about caring for urban trees and getting to know one another, we felt pleased of the difference we had made.
Here at Big Reuse, we think local is where environmental change begins. Occasionally, all you need is a rake, a bag of mulch, and a few willing neighbors.
