The countdown to composting in Brooklyn is almost over! Although there’s not going to be a ball drop and confetti, we’ll help you keep track of important composting dates so you’re ready to go when service starts!
-
11 days until service officially starts October 2nd. Service in your neighborhood will fall on your first recycling day after October 2nd. You can confirm your collection days here.
-
Composting leaf and yard waste also becomes mandated for Brooklyn residents at this time.
-
As a reminder yard waste can be mixed with food scraps in your brown bin, placed in a separate labeled bin, or placed in clear plastic or brown paper bags on your recycling day.
-
Food scraps must go in a DSNY Brown Bin or your own labeled bin
-
-
23 days until the brown bin order form closes on October 13th. You can find the form here. This will be your only guaranteed window to get a free bin, so order it while you can.
-
If you miss this window or find you need additional space for food scraps, you can always place a decal on your own bin that has a secure lid and is under 55 gallons. You can order the decals here.
-
Curbside composting will expand to Staten Island and the Bronx on March 25th, 2024 and Manhattan on October 7th 2024.
-
Keep your eyes out for updates on Brown Bin order forms for each borough.
