Tens of thousands of people marched on Sunday in Manhattan to end fossil fuels! Even the event's organizers were surprised by the turnout which was estimated to be between 50 and 75 thousand people.
Climate marches took place around the world this past week to put pressure on global leaders just ahead of the UN's Climate Ambition summit. The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, convened the summit yesterday and allowed only the leaders of countries that are taking serious action on the climate emergency to speak. High-level leaders from China and the US, the world's two biggest polluters, were not invited to speak.
This summit was intended to bring attention to countries that are acting with haste on climate change and was just a precursor to the annual UN climate talks which will begin in November. At this meeting they will have to contend with their own 2023 assessment of climate progress which concluded that the world is not moving quickly enough to avoid a calamitous 2.5 degree Celsius global temperature increase.
Thank you to everyone who marched and participated in protests so far this week. Climate Week continues through the weekend, check out this event list to see what's going on!
