A Busy Street Tree Care Season: Summer 2025! - Big Reuse

A Busy Street Tree Care Season: Summer 2025!

The Big Reuse Street Tree Care team has been hard at work this summer, bringing fun, hands-on street tree care events to neighborhoods across New York City. We have joined with volunteers of all ages from community groups and schools to show how caring for trees can be simple, enjoyable, and something everyone can do. This summer, we also had the chance to work with two new partners, the HSVK Block Association and Strawberries on the Stoop, expanding our reach and growing even more community connections.

So far this season, we have cared for 223 street trees with the help of 242 volunteers, including 102 youths! Together volunteers have picked up trash, loosened hard soil so roots can breathe, and added compost and mulch to tree beds. These small but important steps give trees the support they need to grow strong and healthy, while also helping to keep our streets cooler during hot summer days. More than just a day of work, these events are about building community. Volunteers leave not only knowing why trees are important, but also feeling confident that they can continue to care for them in the weeks and months ahead. Together, we are making New York City’s urban forest stronger, greener, and ready to thrive for years to come.

In addition to this tree care work, our tree care team hosted three other community events reaching over 145 people, further expanding our efforts to bring sustainability education into more neighborhoods across the city.
