Our street tree care team finished another strong year of engaging New Yorkers in strengthening neighborhood street trees and learning to care for their own green spaces!
Over the past 12 months they’ve:
- Hosted 77 events across 9 community districts across Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan with over 70 partners
- Had 2,854 attendees, including 973 youth and 224 older adults
- Cared for 921 trees
Huge thank you to council members Caban, Gutierrez, Hanif, Hudson, Joseph, Menin, Nurse, Restler, and Won for funding this work in their districts.
During these events, our team engages volunteers to remove trash, aerate the soil, and add a blend of compost and mulch to street tree beds in the form of unscreened compost. Compost application helps soil retain water and nutrients, rehabilitating unhealthy trees and strengthening the land against flooding. It also aids in the decompaction of soil over time. We also emphasize and discuss the ways communities can steward the urban forest together, including education on why urban trees are important as well as the use of specific tools and tips for continued tree maintenance.
