Finishing Four Months of Curbside Composting Outreach & Support! - Big Reuse

Finishing Four Months of Curbside Composting Outreach & Support!

From Woodside to Far Rockaway to Bay Ridge, our curbside composting outreach team has been hard at work educating New Yorkers in correctly using the Department of Sanitation’s (DSNY) mandatory curbside composting service. Since March 2025, we’ve hit 110+ places in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. You’ve seen us give away almost 4 thousand kitchen food scrap containers, multilingual information, and brown bin decals at libraries, parks, schools, farmer’s markets, businesses, and City Councilmember offices. In addition to giveaways, we’ve presented at 22 high rise buildings, co-ops, management groups, and neighborhood groups, troubleshooting compost separation specific to the residence (in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese)!

The demand is not stopping! At nearly every event, we are asked:

  • When is the next one?
  • Where can I get more food scrap containers?
  • Can you do an event in my building?

Currently, the last day of funding for our outreach team is June 30, 2025. We are grateful to be a part of many New Yorkers’ first forays into using curbside composting bins and separating food scraps as a daily routine.

If you would like curbside composting support from Big Reuse beyond June 2025, we urge you to call or email your Councilmember to ask for continued funding in fiscal year 2026 (beginning July 1, 2025). Tell them why you and your neighbors would benefit from individualized support! We would love to be there for you.

See the list of our last June 2025 outreach events.

Hear from neighbors we've supported:

"Thank you again, and [a] shout out to Devyn for giving us the presentation, bringing us the kitchen counter top bins and answering questions we had! Will let other Coops in the neighborhood know of our great experience." - a Queens Coop

"We were on a tight [meeting] schedule, but Devyn was able to succinctly explain the composting program, give useful tips, and answer questions from our members. Devyn’s information was very helpful and much appreciated!" - a Queens civic association
