Come on down at 10:30am Thursday, March 14 at City Hall Park to rally with City Council Sanitation Committee Chair Shaun Abreu to demand that the city restore funding for community composting. Submit testimony to the City Council Sanitation Committee - written up to 72 hours after or Thursday at 1pm by Zoom or in person! City Council is very supportive of community composting because of the outpouring of support from amazing constituents! We are so grateful for your support!!
Over next three weeks, City Council has public testimony on the Mayor's budget for FY 2025 (7/1/2024 to 6/30/25). The Mayor's new budget has eliminated funding for community composting - despite New Yorkers submitting almost 50,000 letters of support. It is now up to City Council to restore the funding for community composting!
Reports indicate $3.3 billion more in tax revenues for 2024 and 2025 than projected by the Mayor - undermining the claim drastic budget cuts were needed in the first place. A tiny portion 0.0058 of the Department of Sanitation budget of $1.7 Billion should go to fund community based waste solutions like community composting, outreach, school programs, and other non profit waste diversion programs
Community composting makes compost locally from Parks yard waste and food scraps to green NYC - it just makes sense from environmental, equity, engagement, and economic standpoint.
